Bible in a Year, with the record alongside

All 1,189 chapters in 365 days, in canonical order, three or four chapters a day. What makes this one different is that a dozen of the days carry a note pointing at the external record for what you are about to read.

How it is built

Straight canonical order, Genesis to Revelation. The chapters are divided as evenly as they go: every day is three or four chapters, with no day longer than four and none shorter than three. A block occasionally runs across the end of one book into the next, which is what keeps the daily load level — the alternative is spending a whole day on Obadiah and then paying for it later with eleven chapters of Revelation.

No thematic shuffling, no Old-and-New-each-day pairing, no psalm bolted onto every reading. Those arrangements are useful for other purposes; this one is for reading the books as books, in the order the canon puts them.

The notes

Roughly a dozen days carry a short note. They mark the points where the reading crosses into territory the external record touches — where Assyria enters the story and the kings start turning up in inscriptions, where the Babylonian chronicles begin dating the events to the year, where the return under Cyrus is documented from the Persian side.

The notes are attached to passages, not to day numbers. That sounds like a technicality and is not: the first version of this plan pinned its notes to fixed days, and when the chapter division was adjusted every note ended up beside the wrong reading. They are now anchored to the book and chapter they belong to, and the day is worked out from wherever that chapter falls.

If you fall behind

Skip to today’s date rather than trying to catch up. A year plan that becomes a debt stops being read in February, which is the failure mode of every one of these ever published. The chapters you missed will still be there next year.
