The books of the Bible

Sixty-six overviews, one per book, in the order the books come in. Each one covers what the book is, how it is put together, how its date is argued, and where — if anywhere — the external record touches it.

These are not devotional introductions. Each overview treats the book as a document: who could have written it, when, on what evidence, and what survives outside the Bible that bears on it. Where the honest answer is that nothing outside the Bible bears on it, the overview says so and explains why — that is the ordinary situation for most ancient literature, and it is worth understanding rather than working around.

Books whose names appear without a link have not been written yet. They are listed anyway, because an index that hides its gaps is misreporting the size of the archive.
