Breasted, Ancient Records of Egypt, vol. IV

Breasted’s volumes remain the most widely available English translation of the Egyptian historical inscriptions, and volume IV covers the period that includes Sheshonq I.

The Karnak list

The Bubastite Portal at Karnak carries a relief of Sheshonq I with a long list of towns taken on a campaign into the Levant. Many of the names are legible and several are identifiable with places in Israel and Judah. The list is the external evidence usually set beside 1 Kings 14:25-26, which reports a campaign by Shishak against Jerusalem in the fifth year of Rehoboam.

The complication that gets skipped

Jerusalem is not among the legible names on the Karnak list, and the towns that are legible are concentrated in the north and in the Negev rather than in Judah. The identification of Sheshonq with Shishak is very widely accepted; the match between the campaign as Karnak describes it and the campaign as Kings describes it is much less tidy than popular summaries suggest.

Why a century-old translation is cited with a warning

Breasted is out of copyright and readable in full, which makes it checkable. It has also been superseded, and readings of damaged names in the Karnak list have been revised repeatedly since. Where a specific name matters to an argument, the modern epigraphic literature is where that argument has to be made.
